Two Days in Keqiao: Discovering China's Fabric Industry

After spending four productive days exploring the Yiwu market, our final two days with our American client took us to a completely different part of China's sourcing industry: Keqiao.

Keqiao, located in Shaoxing, is widely known as one of China's largest and most important textile and fabric markets.

Unlike Yiwu, which offers products across an enormous number of categories, Keqiao is heavily focused on the textile industry.

Here, you can find fabrics for **clothing, furniture upholstery, quilting, and many other applications**, as well as both processed and unprocessed materials.

The variety of fabrics available is enormous, including cotton, linen, polyester, spandex, and many different blends.

Day One: Exploring the Fabric Market

On our first day, we went directly to the main market in Keqiao. The client's main objective was to find factories producing **100% cotton fabrics suitable for quilting**, which she explained is a significant industry in the United States.

Our goal, however, wasn't simply to find factories producing the correct type of cotton fabric. We also needed to identify suppliers capable of **printing custom designs onto the fabric and dyeing the base material into different colors**.

This meant asking a lot of questions and paying close attention to the different materials, production capabilities, and customization options each supplier offered.

The Keqiao market is enormous, and the variety of fabrics available is impressive. You can find materials suitable for practically every type of clothing, from lightweight fabrics designed for summer to much heavier materials for winter clothing.

For someone unfamiliar with the textile industry, it can be surprising just how many different variations of fabric exist.

The differences aren't simply about the type of material being used. **Thickness, weave, texture, softness, durability, weight, and finishing techniques** can all completely change the characteristics of a fabric.

After spending most of the day exploring the market and speaking with different suppliers, we had gained a much clearer understanding of what was available and which factories could potentially meet the client's requirements.

Day Two: Furniture Fabrics and the Printing Process

The following day, we explored another area of Shaoxing, where we found a number of factory shops specializing in **fabrics for furniture and upholstery**.

Many of the fabrics we saw were polyester blends with cotton, and the variety was once again impressive.

One thing that caught our attention was how many of the suppliers still maintained a more **traditional style of fabric design**. Some of the patterns reminded me of fabrics I remember seeing when I was a child.

Instead of simply printing a design onto the surface, some fabrics had **woven patterns and engravings built directly into the material**, creating an additional layer of texture and depth.

It was interesting to see how traditional techniques and modern manufacturing continue to exist alongside each other in the same market.

After exploring the furniture fabrics, we visited a nearby factory to learn more about **how designs are actually printed onto fabrics**.

This was one of the most interesting parts of our time in Keqiao.

We learned that the printing process can differ depending on the material being used.

**Cotton requires a specific type of printing process and machinery, while polyester and blended fabrics can require different equipment and techniques.**

The factory showed us how one of these processes works.

First, the design requested by the customer is printed onto a special sheet of paper. The printed paper is then placed directly against the fabric and passed through a machine containing heated rollers.

The heat and pressure bring the paper and fabric together, allowing the ink to transfer from the paper onto the fabric and creating the final design.

Seeing this process in person was fascinating because it gave us a much better understanding of what happens behind the scenes before a finished printed fabric reaches the customer.

After two days in Keqiao, I came away with a much greater appreciation for just how complex the textile industry really is.

There are so many factors that need to be considered when choosing a fabric —

**the material itself, thickness, weave, texture, weight, color, printing method, durability, and even the way the fabric is finished**

can all make a significant difference.

We also came across **jacquard fabrics**, which were another interesting example of how designs can be incorporated directly into the structure of the fabric rather than simply being printed onto the surface.

Overall, these two days were extremely productive. We gathered a large amount of information for our client, discovered new suppliers, learned more about the manufacturing and printing processes, and gained a much deeper understanding of the textile industry.

Just like our time in Yiwu, Keqiao reminded me that **the more you understand a product and how it is manufactured, the better you can help a client make the right sourcing decisions**.

Every market in China has its own specialties, and knowing where to go — and what questions to ask once you get there — is a major part of successful sourcing.

With our time in Keqiao now complete, we finished this part of the client's trip with a lot of new information, new contacts, and another valuable learning experience.
