How fumigation is done in Yiwu?
Yiwu has only one company (State Owned) offer fumigation service. And that company is not very busy. Comparing with how many wooden products containers (container contains wooden products) are shipped out of Yiwu, you will find out that not many companies have their products fumigated before shipping out.
In many cases, export companies just buy fumigation certificates, instead of having products really fumigated. Because having products fumigated is not easy at all in Yiwu.
First, because only one company is offering fumigation service, no competition, you can imagine how their service is.
Secondly, all fumigated products must apply for China commodity inspection to have the fumigated products inspected. This inspection will cost much more money than fumigation itself. And not all products can pass inspection.
Thirdly, having products shipped back and forth between warehouse and fumigation spot, loading and unloading each time will all increase overall cost.
Considering the cost of time and money, having a full container fumigated is always better than just having a few cartons fumigated.
What is the cost?
Fumigation itself doesn't cost much money. Fumigating a 20" container is about 150-200USD, but commodity inspection by China Customs costs more. Inspection fees will be depend on what products and how many types of products are inside the container. The cost of fumigating less than 10 cbm is about half the price of a 20" container.
What products need to be fumigated?
Any timber/wooden/bamboo products like furniture, vases, decoration arts, and products contain natural plants that can threat pest control. If you want to buy home decor from Yiwu, you will need to be extremely careful about your selection.
For specific info about this, you'll need to confirm with your customs/customs clearance agent.

From our experiences, agricultural countries like Australia, New Zealand, and United States caring very much about fumigation.

Fumigation usually involves the following phases:
First the area to be fumigated is usually covered to create a sealed environment; next the fumigant is released into the space to be fumigated;
Then, the space is held for a set period while the fumigant gas percolates through the space and acts on and kills any infestation in the product, next the space is ventilated so that the poisonous gases are allowed to escape from the space, and render it safe for humans to enter.
